Ippocalyptica This is in line with the modern Finnish black metal that you know and love, but with a far stronger sense of dynamics than most of their contemporaries. I love my black metal blazing fast more often than not, but I appreciate when a band slows it down to provide a necessary respite from the whirlwind or to build tension before exploding once again. Korgonthurus knows exactly how to do this, and as a bonus, the tremolo riffing here is totally on point. One of 2020’s most-overlooked albums! Favorite track: Syyttäjäenkeli.

Diabolus in Muzaka Finnish black metal that pulls out all the stops with great riffs and melodies. Varied yet focused and organized songwriting, solid vocals, and good production make this the total package for black metal in 2020. Favorite track: Yön lapsi.
